Crime is up in Nassau County.

So? What if crime is up statewide…perhaps due to the the ongoing downturn in the economy? How should we go about determining Ms. Rice’s job performance in that case?

Azi deserves an “A” for effort. EVERY reporter should be checking the numbers. Unfortunately , Azi hasn’t yet proven anything — one way or the other. You can’t analyze Nassau County’s crime statistics in a vacuum. You need some basis of comparison.

At the very least, Azi needs to see how things were doing statewide, in addition to Nassau County. How about something simple like comparing the the percent change in crime between 2006 and 2009 statewide versus in Nassau County?s Or how about looking at the percent change in crime for just VIOLENT crime statewide versus in Nassau County. Or how about comparing Nassau county’s figures to the aggregate figures for just the counties outside of NYC (rather than the statewide figure). You get the idea.

A person might use something like the county by county statistics from [url="http://www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us/crimnet/ojsa/stats.htm"]NYS DCJS[/url] rather than stats from Nassau County’s website. A person might also ponder whether arrests or convictions would be a better measure of Ms. Rice’s job performance assuming both types of data are available somewhere someplace. Lots of arrests — which may or may not be warranted — don’t mean diddly squat if they don’t result in a conviction.

Yup. This is most excellent news. We might need to increase the number of comments listed to 8 or 10 shortly, IMHO. Five might be a tad stingy.

Thankfully, the trackbacks have been nuked, too, as evidenced by the text “Pinging is currently not allowed” at the bottom of each of Liz’s post. Hallelujah!!!

I’m also hoping that Liz nukes post titles like “Here and Now” or the “Weekend that Was.” Oy vey. Surely, the blog goddess can do better than that. Maybe reclaim some post titles from her last two blogs. It’s not like they’re copyrighted or anything.
