NOW-NYS President Marcia Pappas issued a statement praising Rep. Louise Slaughter for sounding the alarm on what she called US Supreme Court Justice nominee Elena Kagan’s “troubling” record on abortion rights.

At issue is a 1997 memo Kagan co-authored when she was a White House aide in the Clinton administration that advised then-President Clinton to support amendments designed to give Democrats cover on the controversial partial-birth abortion issue.

“Like Slaughter, NOW-NYS finds that memo troubling,” Pappas said.

Before NOW-NYS supports this nominee, women need answers as to how Kagan will rule on issues of reproductive rights; abortion, contraception, and all forms of medical procedures that would affect a woman’s privacy in making important decisions about her body.”

Pappas issued a call for other women’s rights, pro-choice organizations, and like-minded US Senators to join her organization in “demanding that the Senate Judiciary Committee ask the very important questions in order to clarify Kagan’s position.”
