Former Hudson Valley Assemblyman Tom Kirwan is hoping to reclaim the 100th Assembly district this November.

After 14 years of representing the district that includes Ulster, Dutchess, and Orange counties, Kirwan was defeated in 2008 by Democrat Frank Skartados by fewer than 1,000 votes.

The 77-year-old Republican and former State Trooper says his loss was a result of a “tidal wave” of victories that trickled down from the presidential election. However, he told YNN’s Curtis Schick that he believes he’ll not only reclaim the district for the GOP, but he can change the culture of Albany.

“It was really awful when I was there, it seems like it has gotten measurably worse. I know I have the ideas that can change it.”

Skartados announced in April that he would seek another two-year term in the Assembly. He says that Kirwan has every right to run again, but is confident he’ll be the one re-elected.

“I found it ironic because I couldn’t agree with [Kirwan] more that Albany is broken. I’m fighting for real change by voting against tax increases and increased spending. I know I’m doing the right things for my constituents.”
