Rep. Paul Ryan For Malpass

Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, has recorded a testimonial video lauding economist and US Senate hopeful David Malpass, saying it would be phenomenal and extremely helpful to have someone of his knowledge and character and integrity” in Washington, D.C.

To call Ryan a conservative is actually something of an understatement. He has proposed things like privatizing Social Security and ending traditional Medicare and most of Medicaid.

The three Republicans who have declared their candidacy to take on Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – Malpass, Bruce Blakeman and former Rep. Joe DioGuardi – are battling for support of both the GOP and the Conservative Party.

Blakeman is so far the only contender who has claimed to already have hit the 25 percent mark of the weighted convention vote necessary to get onto the ballot.

Yesterday, Malpass announced he had landed the endorsement of the Niagara County GOP and the Bronx Conservative Party. DioGuardi announced Monday that the Wayne County Conservative Party had backed his candidacy.

It’s too bad Rep. Ryan didn’t do as thorough a job of vetting Malpass as he did analyzing our federal budget deficit and devising ways to cut spending. Malpass’ creds are few: he’s going for the halo effect from his stint in the Reagan administration and conveniently not discussing his August 2007 article in the WSJ (“Don’t panic about the credit market”) while he was chief global economist at Bear Stearns, which was still selling mortgage-infected securities as they were tanking. He doesn’t even have a degree in econ! C’mon, Paul, you can do better than this.

Seriously, I trust Malpass about as far as I can throw him. The last thing we need is another slimy Wall Street character in a position to influence policy.

I just saw on Twitter hashtag #tcot that @JSELLNYC asked you why you have 13 articles on David Malpass ( and even 5 on Bruce Blakeman) but none on Joe DioGuardi, the front runner in the NY GOP for Kirsten Gillibrand’s seat– at least according to the Marist poll. If you’re running a statewide political program, don’t you think you’re missing something?

The answer to that: Joe DioGuardi’s press operation is all but nonexistent, while Malpass’ people are pushing very hard. Ditto for Blakeman. If a candidate wants to get his or her message out to voters and the media, they have to be pro-active about it. I would say I get ten press releases/calls/emails from DioGuardi’s opponents to every one I get from him. Perhaps you might ask him why he hasn’t stepped that up? – LB
