Saujani To Maloney: I’m More Pro-Obama Than You (Updated)
Reshma Saujani is trying to capitalize on a report that her primary opponent, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, took a pass on raising $25,000 to get on the host list for tonight’s DCCC fundraiser to focus on her own money-gathering efforts.
Maloney spokesman George Arzt told City Hall’s David Freedlander that the DCCC doesn’t ask incumbents with primaries to raise, because, as he put it: “You are raising money for your primary. It is a burden to do that.”
In an e-mail to supporters, Saujani’s campaign manager Kevin Lawler referenced Arzt’s quote, saying:
“Her campaign said that raising money is ‘a burden.’ She’s decided to focus on preserving her own job.
“Maybe the incumbent simply chose not to help raise money because President Obama doesn’t take special interest corporate PAC contributions at his events. After all, those special interest donors have lined Maloney’s pockets throughout her career.”
“Rather than focusing solely on her own electoral prospects, Reshma Saujani is encouraging her supporters to raise money for Democrats around the country. Please donate to the DCCC and let President Obama know that if we elect Reshma, the 14th District of New York won’t let him down.”
Saujani, a former hedge fund manager who has raised money for Obama, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry, has used those contacts to bring in just over $800,000 since November for what even her supporters admit is a longshot campaign to unseat an 18-year incumbent who is supported by the bulk of the Democratic establishment.
Maloney, who was recently endorsed (via press release) by Obama – recall that she was among the many Democrats to take a pass on challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – has raised roughly $660,000 since last fall, but has close to $2 million on hand.
Here’s the full text of Lawler’s e-mail:
Dear XXXXX,
Representative Carolyn Maloney unveiled a plan yesterday to preserve one job in New York – her own.
President Obama is coming to New York’s 14th District tonight for a fundraiser to benefit Democrats around the country, but unlike much of the New York delegation, Rep. Maloney chose not to help raise money for the event, even though she’s speaking to the audience.
Her campaign said that raising money is “a burden.” She’s decided to focus on preserving her own job.
Maybe the incumbent simply chose not to help raise money because President Obama doesn’t take special interest corporate PAC contributions at his events. After all, those special interest donors have lined Maloney’s pockets throughout her career.
Rather than focusing solely on her own electoral prospects, Reshma Saujani is encouraging her supporters to raise money for Democrats around the country. Please donate to the DCCC and let President Obama know that if we elect Reshma, the 14th District of New York won’t let him down.
Thank you for your support.
Kevin Lawler
Campaign Manager
UPDATE: Maloney’s campaign manager Alix Afnang sent the following response:
“The Congresswoman is proud to have raised and contributed $280,368 for the DCCC so far this cycle to elect Democrats to Congress. She is also honored to have the full support of President Obama; together, they are working day and night to get our economy back on track. How much has Ms. Saujani raised for the DCCC this cycle?”
