Schenectady County Legislature Chair Susan Savage just announced that she will make a major announcement considering her political future on Sunday at 1 p.m.

It is widely believed she will (finally) be formally jumping into the race against veteran GOP Sen. Hugh Farley in the 44th SD.

Reports of her potential candidacy first surfaced in January, when Senate sources were pushing for her to run.

It was also speculated that she might switch races and challenge Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, who is seen as vulnerable since he lost his special election bid in NY-20 (a loss that also cost him his minority leader post).

There has also been widespread speculation for some time that Farley, who has been in office since 1976, might retire. But he has shown no intention of doing so of late.

The media contact on the press release announcing Savage’s impending announcement is Doug Forand, a former DSCC deputy chief of staff and director who co-founded the consulting firm Red Horse Strategies.

The enrollment numbers are only slightly against Savage. Republicans hold a 10 thousand person enrollment in the district – 75,976 to 65,443 for the Democrats.

Savage is very well-known in the district. She’s married to lobbyist Steve Weingarten and has nine (!) kids. I believe she’s director of Intergovernmental Relations at ORPS in her day job.

UPDATE: Forand informs me that as of 5 p.m. today, Savage has resigned her state post.
