Spitzer Running? Not Running? Both? Neither?
Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, continuing on his image rehabilitation tour, has been all over the map of late when it comes to the “will you run again” question.
After insisting to WPIX less than a week ago that he doesn’t have any thoughts about running for political office right now, and adding “it’s not what I’m doing,” Spitzer today told NY1′s Roma Torre:
“Am I ruling it out? No. I’ve made it very clear that I’m not ruling it out. But also I’m not saying to anybody that I’m running in 2010, I’m running in 2012. This is not some predestined course by any stretch of the imagination.”
In the interview, which will air on “Inside City Hall” at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Spitzer also admitted yet again that he pines for the days when he was in charge, saying:
“I wish desperately that I were there fighting on the issues I care deeply about. I won’t get to the litany of those issues. We will talk about them later, no doubt. But do you miss it? Of course.”
The ex-governor spoke at length about the prostitution scandal that forced him from office, saying he hopes he’s better for having experienced the scandal, but wishes it didn’t happen. He also dismisses any talk that resignation was perhaps the wrong way to go, explaining he believes he did “what was the right thing to do.”
Spitzer largely kept himself in check when it comes to his successor in the AG’s office who is now angling for the governorship, Andrew Cuomo, refusing to slam Cuomo for failing to follow his lead and announce extra early so as to leave no question about his intentions.
“(Cuomo) has said very little about the substantive issues affecting the state,” Spitzer said. “He has said he is focused on being attorney general. I’m not going to condemn one approach, his, or praise mine. Others will do that.”
“I do think that he now has a responsibility to be very forthright about what he is going to propose for the state.”
It seems only fair to note that while Spitzer did announce early and weigh in on a number of policy issues, including the 2005-06 budget, he only took positions on things he wanted to discuss, refusing unless forced (as by then-Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi on property tax relief, for example) to address the areas he didn’t feel prepared to delve into.
