With very little fanfare – and not even a press release yet – Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence ended his longshot LG bid and pledged to do whatever he can to boost the Cuomo-Duffy ticket.

“I am officially working for the Cuomo-Duffy team, and I will continue to go around the state and talk about the need for great leadership at the top of the Democratic Party, and I believe that Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Duffy will provide that leadership,” St. Lawrence told me.

When I asked if “officially” means he has been asked by the Cuomo campaign to take on a cheerleading role, St. Lawrence replied:

“Right now, they’re focused on rolling out the announcement…I received a call from (Cuomo’s) office early this morning. They told me they appreciated my statements for Democratic unity from the very beginning.”

“This was never about me. This was about the Democratic Party and electing Democrats across the state.”

Unlike his fellow Democratic LG contender, Bill Samuels, St. Lawrence always made it clear he wouldn’t primary Cuomo’s LG pick, basically making his brief statewide run more of a name recognition-rising exercise than anything else.

St. Lawrence noted that he won the DRC straw poll and has been invited to a lot of upstate Democratic events this summer that he plans to attend.

As for his own political future, St. Lawrence did not deny that he’s eyeing a bid for Rockland County executive if the current occupant of that office, Republican Scott Vanderhoef, runs for the seat Sen. Tom Morahan will be vacating the end of the year.

Interestingly, if a vacancy opens up in that office, there will not be an election to fill it. Instead, the Rockland County Legislature, which is controlled by the Democrats, will select a candidate, giving St. Lawrence a pretty good shot at landing it.
