Cuomo Raising In Albany (Updated)
AG Andrew Cuomo has been largely staying off the campaign trail since announcing his gubernatorial campaign last month, but he’s making time to raise money to fuel his statewide bid.
A helpful reader forwarded this invite to an event the AG is hosting at the Fort Orange Club in Albany tomorrow. Tickets start at $750 and rise rapidly from there to an eye-popping $25,000 for event chairs. (Sponsors pay $10,000, while patrons shell out $2,500).
UPDATE: Apparently, this fundraising has been called off, according to the Cuomo campaign. There’s no immediate information as to why, but as soon as I know – assuming I find out – I’ll update again.
As of mid-January, Cuomo had $16.1 million on hand. The next state Board of Elections reports are due to be released just shy of one month from now.
The Fort Orange Club, for those who might not be familiar with Albany, is about two blocks from the Capitol.
It’s an interesting choice of locales for Cuomo, who is running on an anti-Albany plank, since it’s an old-school hangout for elected officials and a favorite meeting spot for Republicans (the state GOP tends to get together there quite frequently).
As the DP notes, Cuomo today sent an e-mail to supporters, asking them to sign on to his five-point reform plan and informing them that the needs of “ordinary New Yorkers” are being “ignored in Albany, and government officials have forgotten they work for you.”
That would not, of course, include the AG, who is studiously focused on his current job, announcing a crackdown on child porn during an upstate swing and largely avoiding the press in the process.
Cuomo did take an off-topic question from The Buffalo News’ Bob McCarthy and rejected Rick Lazio’s accusations that he failed to pursue Election Law violations by Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr.’s counsel, Steve Pigeon, as “silly.”
