Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is engaging in some last-minute delegate-wrangling prior to the vote for governor this morning, and insisted in an impromptu mini-gaggle with reporters he’s “confident” about getting on the ballot.

“Put it like this: All we want to get is 50-plus-one and then everything else will take care of itself,” Levy said when asked to game out his chances here at the GOP convention.

Levy was far more chatty when it came to Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Cuomo, insisting he’s the AG’s “worst nightmare” and accusing Cuomo of trying to morph himself into Levy-lite.

“If you look at where they’ve been centering their attack, it’s been against me,” the county executive said.

“They do not want me to be the one who emerges as the top candidate because I’m going to have the resources I’ve got the record that juxtaposes just perfectly against…Cuomo’s.”

“…Mr. Cuomo is trying to sound more and more like Steve Levy every day, talking about the tax caps and the spending caps. He’ll never be able to govern like Steve Levy because he’ll have so much control by those special interests.”

Levy dismissed concern voiced by a number of GOP delegates here that he switched parties too late, making them uncomfortable about casting their lot with a candidate who’s still a Democrat.

“In my case it’s different from some other folks who’ve done it because I’ve already been endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties in my pervious races,” the county executive insisted.

“So they know it’s not a matter of opportunism. They know that I’ve been following those principles in my governance.”

And then he dashed off in pursuit of a delegate, telling reporters: “I’ve got to see this woman; it’s very important.”
