NY 50th State To Adopt No-Fault Divorce
Over the weekend, Governor Paterson signed nearly 100 bills into law.
Most notably among them was a bill making New York the 50th and final state to implement No Fault Divorce. Essentially, it lets married couples to break up under mutual consent. It’s something they can’t do under current law, which requires partners to separate for a year or find cause for the marriage by claiming adultery, abandonment or cruelty.
The sponsor of the bill is Assemblyman Jonathan Bing, who represents parts of Manhattan. Bing joined Liz Benjamin from New York City Monday to talk more about the new law.
