Saland Nets $425K
Sen. Steve Saland, one of the four Republicans to vote in favor of same-sex marriage, is reporting a huge haul in his campaign finance report today: more than $425,000 raised from both same-sex marriage advocates and deep-pocketed GOP donors.
Among the Poughkeepsie Republicans donors is Ted Olson, the former Bush administration official who has emerged as a major supporter of same-sex marriage. Olson donated $1,250. Robert Ziff, another wealthy same-sex marriage supporter, donated $10,300.
In addition to voting for the law, Saland was instrumental in crafting the religious protections amendment that ultimately was included to the measure.
David Koch, the controversial libertarian-oriented conservative, donated $16,800.
All told, Saland landed $425,202 in contributions, a huge amount in an off-cycle fundraising year for a candidate who usually has little competition, even in an area that’s trending toward Democrats. He has $503,019 in the bank.
