The maps proposed today by a federal magistrate are great, but cutting a deal in Albany on the House lines would be nicer, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver told reporters today.

Silver, D-Manhattan, said the Magistrate Roanne Mann provided a good guide for how the maps should ultimately be drawn.

“I always (want) an agreement,” Silver said. “That’s our responsibility ultimately and I think maybe what the judge did was give us the impetus or the template to now make the necessary deals.”

Though everything in Albany tends to be linked during negotiations, Silver added that wasn’t the case.

“I have no issues. It’s Assembly-Senate-Congress as far as I know,” Silver said.

The speaker said he had “no reaction” to the proposed elimination of Rep. Bob Turner’s district. Silver had wanted to keep the district, formerly held by Anthony Weiner, because of the likelihood a Democrat would be able to recapture the seat.

Negotiations on an amendment to the state’s Constitution that would create a new process to oversee redistricting continue, Silver said. That amendment would not be in place until the next round, 2022.

“I think that negotiating is doing well,” he said. “There’s parameters of it, a couple of nuances that need to be agreed to it, but I think it’s doing well.”
