Dude, who needs Global History and Geography when you have GPS and the History Channel on your smartphone?

If the Regents toss that test in favor in an American Pop Culture exam, they should be impeached by the State Senate, if possible.

The Occupy Wall Streeter's will eventually march on Wall Street;
the way Spartacus marched on Rome; for bread and freedom from oppression.

[The Regents are considering
a proposal from the state Education Department to make the statewide
Global History and Geography exam optional for some students. It’s the
most-failed of the five Regents exams required to graduate high school.]

Typical NYS. If the kids are too ignorant to pass a test, just eliminate the test. That keeps our graduation stats up. In a couple of years, these kids will be the people in a Leno or Letterman (comedy) video -- people who don't know the difference between a state and a country, don't know the capital of the U.S. and can't even tell you how many world wars there were. Jeezus.

It's a complete disservice to the children of NYS, that we "reform" education by lowering the bar until our little dummies can hop over it.

BTW, I read the NYT article and IBO report on the the methodology behind the NYC school report cards. What a Rube Goldberg contraption NYC has concocted! If a reasonably intelligent person has to stare at the formulas for an hour (or more) to decipher what they did (and still find counter-intuitive calculations), there's something wrong.

Simple is best, IMHO. They could have avoided a lot of problems by (1) working with plain, old, continuous percentages for most of their calculations, rather than (2) creating LAYER UPON LAYER of arbitrary and discrete index numbers right from the get-go. What does it mean INTUITVELY to go from 1 to a 2? Is that equivalent to going from a 2 to a 3? Is going from a 4 to a 4.5 half as good as going from a 1 to a 2? Why did their indices have a maximum of 4.5...rather than 5 or whatever. Who knows?! As the saying goes: "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t."

Poor NYRA.

Move over, Hevesi -- company's coming.

The best they can hope for is that this whole mess lands in the lap of Albany Co. DA Soares.
