Meet Hakeem
You may already know him as Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, the up-and-coming promising young black Democrat from Brooklyn who was planning to primary a veteran congressman, Ed Towns, until Towns read the writing on the wall and announced his retirement.
But did you know dreamed of making a difference at a very young age? Was a Boy Scout? Played Little League? Attended SUNY Binghamton?
Well, now you do, and so will residents of NY-8 who are scheduled to start receiving this biographical mailer from Jeffries starting tomorrow. This is the assemblyman’s first mailer of the campaign season, and it highlights the upcoming June 26 primary, in which he will face off against NYC Councilman Charles Barron.
(Also running in the district, although not in the primary, is the Green Party candidate, Colin “No Impact Man” Beavan).
The mailer is evidence of what a well-funded campaign is able to do. Jeffries is far and away winning the fundraising race in NY-8, but Barron, who recently netted his first union endorsement from DC 37, has a strong and motivated grassroots following.
It’s interesting that this mailer stresses Jeffries’ “progressive” credentials. One reason DC 37 members chose Barron over the assemblyman, according to sources, was they didn’t like Jeffries’ support of charter schools – a break from the more traditional (and some might say, more progressive) support of public schools and the teachers union.
