Silver: Cuomo The ‘Number One Governor’ In The Country
We’ve got our hands on some exclusive audio clips from last night’s state Democratic Party fundraiser in New York City that featured Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the get-together’s headliner.
A source who attended says there were more than 700 people at the event last night, with tickets ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.
Naturally, there was tons and tons of praise from Democrats directed at Cuomo.
“Andrew Cuomo may be the 56th governor of the state of New York, but he is without a doubt the number one governor in the United States today,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
For sure, Cuomo is perhaps the most prominent Democratic governor in the country save for Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (a possible 2016 primary contender and the chief of the Democratic Governor’s Association).
The event comes after Cuomo solidified his power over the state party picking two co-chairs, not a necessarily surprising development for any state chief executive after being elected.
And it also comes after Cuomo would not rule out supporting Republicans for elected office this fall, including candidates running for the closely divided state Senate.
State Democratic Party Co-Chairman Keith Wright chimed in:
“I’ve had the privilege of serving in Albany for the past 20 years in the New York state Assembly. In all my time in Albany, these past 18 months have been the most successful, and it’s a testament to our governor, to our Legislature and quite frankly they’ve been the most fun.”
In case you missed it on the show last night, Wright naturally backed the governor’s endorsement policy saying it makes sense for him to support the best candidates for office.
