Count Republican House candidate Joe Carvin among the GOP candidates and officials who hope Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to end his candidacy for the Senate following his widely derided statement on “legitimate rape.”

Carvin’s statement, which misspells Akin’s name as “Aiken” seems to suggest he’s moving toward the political center in a Democratic-heavy Congressional district in New York City suburbs.

But Carvin has been unapologetic at lashing out Republicans he views as extreme, including his erstwhile primary opponent who published controversial opinions on mixed-race marriages. Carvin, the Rye town supervisor, faces Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey this fall.

Akin has so far resisted calls from national Republicans to leave the race. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has called the remarks offensive, but did not say whether Akin should drop his bid.

“Mr. Aiken’s comments were as bewildering as they were offensive. They do not reflect the views of other Republican candidates, yet they cast a shadow on the whole party as long as Mr. Aiken remains a candidate. I was hopeful, as initial news reports indicated, that Mr. Aiken was going to make a hasty withdrawal from the Senate race as a result of his hurtful words, but he seems to be reconsidering that. He should get out now.”
