Republican Congressional hopeful Chris Collins has an interesting bit of deflection this morning from his own wealth: attacking Democratic Rep. Kathy Hochul for being a “public sector millionaire.”

“It’s sad to see someone like Kathy Hochul – who has earned millions from a generation of cushy taxpayer-funded jobs – vote for tax hikes on young families with children, seniors, married couples and small businesses. This is exactly what happens when your life is spent on a government payroll – you just don’t get it” said Chris Collins in a news release.

Collins’ campaign says records show Hochul, a former Erie County clerk, ranks among the millionaires in Congress, disclosing assets that total between $1 million and $2.3 million.

Of course, Collins is a rather wealthy individual himself, having in invested in several companies, as well as founding his own successful business that he later sold before being elected Erie County executive.

So, it’s pretty clear what he’s up to: Collins is trying to distinguish his private sector success in year that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney faces uncomfortable questions over his own wealth.

Collins in the statement is leading with his chin on the issue, perhaps trying to blunt whatever line of attack might be used by Democrats.

“As someone who has spent a career in the private sector, I am grateful for a country that has given me the opportunity to succeed. But I know the sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears it takes to make a business successful. As one of the countless small business owners who have forgone a salary to meet a payroll, and ensure that their employees can cash a paycheck, I know how crippling any tax increase on small businesses can be,” Collins said.
