Cuomo: Gun Control Measures On Horizon
In the wake of mass shootings at movie theater Colorado and Sikh temple in Wisoncon this summer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters in New York City this afternoon that he expects some sort of legislation will be taken up in Albany to deal with the issue, saying the spate of violence has “reached an undeniable point.”
“It’s an issue I’ve worked on for many, many years,” Cuomo said. “The gun violence has reached an undeniable point where it’s hard for anyone to refute the damage that’s being done and I do believe it’s time to find out what else we can do and explore what else we can do. We have a number of legislative proposals that I think we’ll be taking up in the next legislative session.”
Gun-control measures have typically failed to gain any traction in the Republican-led Senate over the last 19 months, with Democratic-backed proposals such as the microstamping of bullets has failed in the past legislative session.
But since the most recent spate of violence involving firearms, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has started a new effort through the Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign to push both President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to articulate their plan for gun control.
State Senate Republicans are clearly sensitive to the issue, however, after Majority Leader Dean Skelos cancelled an appearance at a fundraiser for Republican Assemblyman Steve Katz that was billed as a day of “dinner, drinks, pistol and rifle shooting.”
Democratic Sen. Mike Gianaris of Queens introduced a package of gun-control bills, with a centerpiece measure that would limit the purchase of one handgun per month.
Cuomo, a Democrat, has worked well with the Senate’s Republican leadership. Should the GOP retain the majority this year and if Cuomo is intent on pushing through any gun control measures, he would likely face stiff resistance.
