Interviewed earlier this morning on Fred Dicker’s Talk-1300 AM radio show, Gov. Andrew Cuomo brushed aside the criticism that he wasn’t fully living up to pledge to run the most transparent administration in state history.

But he conceded that the press — in addition to never being satisfied with what’s done — is just doing its job.

“It’s the press’s job to always advocate for more transparency, and I understand that,” Cuomo said. “It’s something that I take to heart.”

That message, though, hasn’t precisely trickled down in an administration whose officials have sent out pre-buttal attacks aimed at reporters’ credibility in order to blunt stories criticizing the relative lack of openness. Examples here and here.

Cuomo again reiterated that his definition of openness is to bring government to the average citizens of New York and explain its often opaque inner workings.

“The relationship between the people and the government needs to be strong,” he said.
