Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. today wrote a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressing “serious concern” after a New York Times story found the city is selling spent shell casings to a gun dealer in Georgia.

“While I understand that your department and this administration does not intend to work with disreputable gun and ammunition dealers, today’s article indicates that the city is not sure if the Georgia Arms is a reputable dealer,” Diaz Jr. writes. “New York City should not do business with any company without a thorough check of that entity’s reputation and legalhistory, and it is troubling that your administration is unsure if such a backgrond check took place.”

The letter and Times story also come as Bloomberg, who has started a campaign to push both major party presidential candidates to develop a gun-contol policy, is backing Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who has a lifetime 100 percent rating from the NRA.
