Rep. Peter King acknowledges that the main issue of this presidential election cycle is the economy and jobs.

But that doesn’t mean there should be any lack of conversation on foreign policy and security, he said this morning.

He said the last time there was a lack of foreign policy discussed in a national campaign was 12 years ago, right before the Sept. 11 attacks (and to be sure, I don’t think King was trying to draw a direct correlation between Sept. 11 and a lack of debate on security).

“I wish there was more discussion on foreign policy and also homeland security,” King said. “The last time we went through a campaign without discussing foreign policy was 2000 and a year later we had Sept. 11. I don’t want to be scaring people, but I’m on the Intelligence Committee, I’m chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and at any given time there are threats or threats of threats against us. We can never let our guard down.”

But he understood why the ticket has focused on the economy, in part because it’s the main issue that Republicans believe have the best chance of hammering the president on: The key issue is the economy and I think Governor Romney will be able to turn it around.
