Koch To Campaign For Obama In Florida
Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, credited for making the difference-making endorsement for Republican Bob Turner over Democrat David Weprin in a special election last year, will be heading to the Sunshine State to campaign for President Obama.
The endorsement, of course, came as Koch criticized the Obama administration for not being sufficiently pro-Israel — a theme that resonated heavily in the Jewish-heavy Brooklyn-Queens Congressional district.
But in an email sent out widely this morning, Koch writes that he was asked to campaign on Obama’s behalf and says the Democratic president has improved relations with America’s ally in the region.
Koch also included his op/ed in the South Florida Sun Sentinel (which I’m having some trouble finding online this morning, so anyone who has a link, please send it our way!).
Koch writes:
I believe the President heard the Jewish community’s concerns. His actions, certainly for me, verify that fact. His speech at the United Nations supporting Israel was the strongest statement of its kind ever made by a U.S. president. Even more important was his personal, and successful, involvement at the Security Council preventing the Palestinian Authority from gaining entry to the United Nations as an independent state. That action was clear, unambiguous evidence of his commitment to the Jewish state.
The ex-mayor and New York City reform advocate is heading to Florida for Obama after Labor Day.
