Interviewed on Fred Dicker’s Talk-1300 radio show this morning, Senate Republican candidate Juan Reyes was critical of Democratic Sen. Malcolm Smith possibly running on the GOP line for New York City mayor.

Reyes tied his Republican primary opponent, City Councilman Eric Ulrich, to Smith, drawing a parallel to his opponent’s backing from the GOP establishment (Ulrich received a $250,000 contribution from the Senate Republican Campaign Commiittee).

“I don’t know him, but I think it just goes to show that there’s bad judgment on the part of Albany bosses supporting Malcolm Smith and my opponent in this race,” Reyes said.

As Liz demonstrated yesterday, the Smith for mayor talk is becoming a bit far-fetched for a variety of reasons.

Reyes, who has the support of the Queens County GOP, is more in synch with Chairman Phil Ragusa, who similarly was not enthusiastic about the idea.

Reyes is a former staffer to U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and worked in the Giuliani administration.

The former mayor, perhaps the most prominent Republican in New York save for George Pataki, probably won’t endorse in the primary, Reyes conceded to Dicker.

“I think he’s staying out of it. I don’t think he wants to upset anyone on either side,” he said.
