Sen. Huntley To Be Indicted Monday (Video Added)
From our colleagues at NY1:
Sen. Shirley Huntley warned supporters in Queens today she expects to be indicted and arrested on Monday, but refused to discuss the specific allegations.
Huntley’s dramatic announcement comes almost nine months after one of Huntley’s aides and three others were charged with stealing 30 thousand dollars that were earmarked for a non-profit group that Huntley created.
In December, AG Eric Schneiderman and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced the indictment of Huntley’s aide and the others, saying that they falsely claimed they would use close to 30 thousand dollars in taxpayer money for workshops and conduct outreach to parents on the workings of the public school system.
Schneiderman spokesman James Freeland sent us this quote:
“The appropriate forum in which to respond to the Senator is a court of law, where the Attorney General will prove all facts according to the rules of evidence. Those facts will speak for themselves.”
Huntley was first elected to the State Senate in 2006. An initial opponent of gay marriage, she switched her position and voted to legalize it last year.
This year, she was in a tough primary battle with New York City Councilman James Sanders and her Senate Democratic colleagues had not been doing much to help her. The district is safe for Democrats in the general election.
