The Department of Motor Vehicles will allow those with drivers licenses or non-driver identification cards to register to vote, a move that’s being hailed by good-government advocates for its goal of expanding voter rolls.

Here is Cuomo counsel Mylan Denerstein explaining the program:

Voters can register electronically now on the DMV website.

The full system, however, is not yet in place as a software “tweak”  must be made and the program is rolled out to local county boards of election, Cuomo administration officials said today.

Still, Cuomo’s office expects that once the program is in completely place, it will save up to $270,000 a year and increase the number of registered voters in New York.

New York ranks 47th in voter registration, with 64 percent of the voting-age populace registered.

Voters are able to register or change their information on the My DMV website, which allows drivers to submit their motor vehicle registration. The paper registration, of course, is still available for those who do not have driver or non-driver identification.
