Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today in Batavia plans for an Aug. 15 “business summit” for the state’s booming Greek yogurt industry.

Here’s Cuomo describing what he sees as New York’s ability to foster what a few years back was a niche industry that’s grown mainstream:

An entrepreneurial government means how can government help beyond just do no harm, how can we actively help. And how can we help the yogurt producers and the dairy industry work well. We are making so much yogurt, that we have to make sure we have the milk supply to keep up with the yogurt production. Because when you’re increasing the yogurt production that quickly you have to also increase the dairy supply, so the state has a very active role. we are going to bring together all the key players in this industry, in Albany, in about two weeks, August 15th, and we are going to have a business summit of just the yogurt industry. Focusing on the relationship between the dairy industry and the yogurt producers, to make sure the state is doing everything it can to facilitate that relationship because we want this business to do well, we want this business to thrive, and we want it to thrive in the state of New York.

Cuomo’s love of the yogurt business is no secret.

Fage, based in Johnstown, is prominently featured in the New NY business ads that run nearly non-stop on cable television.

Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy is also a big yogurt guy, telling reporters yesterday in Manhattan that he can’t start his day without New Berlin-based Chobani.
