An Odd Coda To The Chris Ortloff Story
Acting State Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott is out with a somewhat strange post script this afternoon to the downfall of former Assemblyman Chris Ortloff.
The IG issued a report that found former Clinton County Deputy Clerk Glenn Olds violated state policy and federal law when accessing Department of Motor Vehicle records without authorization.
Ortloff, then a member of the State Parole Board, was under investigation for soliciting sex with underage girls, asked Olds in September 2008 to look up the registration of a license plate that ulitmate turned out to belong to the car of an investigator.
Ortloff a month later pleaded guilty to attempting to solicit sex with minors and was sentenced to prison.
Olds had also accessed the DMV files at the request of the county clerk, John Zurlo, who had wanted conact information on constituents so he could send them birthday cards.
“When public officials violate the privacy of citizens, they are not only breaking the law but undermining the public’s trust,” Scott said in a statement. “Shameful incidents like these put public servants under a cloud of suspicion. I thank the State DMV, which has agreed to take corrective action to further prevent such conduct. ”
