Bizarre Postscript To 1990s Assembly Sex Harass Case
Sometimes the world is too weird.
While at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, I wrote about a 1990s sexual harassment case involving former Assemblyman Mark Alan Seigel who was accused – and eventually sued – by a young female staffer, who said her former boss had frequently made lewd comments, propositioned her and then fostered the impression that the two of them were having an affair when they were not.
The case was settled out of court for $80,000.
It turns out that Seigel, who left the Assembly at the end of 1990 and went to work in Florida as a corporate attorney, was at the convention, too, in his latest role as Palm Beach County Democratic chairman.
I didn’t see Seigel in Charlotte, but a Patriot TV reporter did. She interviewed him about the dust-up over the party platform, which involved language removed – and then hastily re-inserted – about God and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
During the interview, Seigel made a number of inflammatory and anti-Christian remarks, including:
“I’m Jewish, I’m not a fan of any other religion than Judaism. The worst possible allies for the Jewish state are the fundamentalist Christians who want Jews to die and convert so they can bring on the second coming of their Lord.”
Seigel has since apologized and taken a leave of absence from his chairmanship.
