A spate of anti-gay and homophobic mailers in at least two state Senate races was denounced today by Republican House candidate Joe Carvin.

Carvin, a moderate GOPer running in Westchester County versus longtime Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey, called on primary voters to reject the ads.

Carvin says he’s for “traditional” marriage but backs civil unions for same-sex couples.

“The American political system is broken in part because of reprehensible campaign tactics like we are seeing this week in Buffalo and Queens,” Carvin said in a statement. “As a Republican, I am outraged and embarrassed by the tone and hurtfulness of these mailers. Republicans who favor or oppose same sex marriage should agree that these mailers are an inappropriate way to have this discussion.”

Republican Senate candidate Eric Ulrich was the subject of an anti-gay mailer that noted his hiring of gay staffers and being friendly with openly gay politicians. He faces Juan Reyes in the Thursday primary. Ulrich and Carvin share the same political strategist in Bill O’Reilly.

And Sen. Mark Grisanti of Buffalo, one of the four Republicans to approve same-sex marriage legalization last year, has been hit with two anti-gay marriage ads, including a rather graphic mailer that’s been widely denounced.

Carvin has a history of knocking Republicans he considers socially extreme.

Earlier during his own primary in June, Carvin blasted his opponent Jim Russell for essays penned that criticized interracial marriage.
