Glaser: All Options On Table For NYRA
State Director of Operations Howard Glaser told reporters this morning that “all options” are on the table regarding a possible privitization of the scandal-scarred New York Racing Association.
Glaser would not confirm — but didn’t deny — Fred Dicker’s column today that reported the state is considering having private companies bid to replace NYRA and operate New York’s three major racetracks at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga.
The news comes as Gov. Andrew Cuomo is on the verge of signing legislation passed by state lawmakers earlier this year that allows for a state takeover of the association, whose top officials resigned after they were accused of improper payouts on exotic bets.
“There are a lot of ideas that are on the table,” Glaser told reporters in a walk-and-talk gaggle following an appearance on Dicker’s Talk-1300 radio show. “Obviously we’re looking at all of the options. We have to wait for a new board to come in.”
The 17-member board that will oversee NYRA includes legislative and gubernatorial appointees, with Cuomo control eight of the selections.
As for privitizing or outright replacing NYRA with an outside firm, Glaser would only reiterat that the administration is waiting for the board to be in place.
“I think all of the options are on the table and again we have to wait for a new board to come in and we’ll wait for their input,” he said.
The governor has a 1 p.m. news conference schedule today, but it is not expected to be about the NYRA takeover.
