Democrat Ted O’Brien’s Senate campaign is launching a new mail campaign highlighting his opposition to property tax increases and overall tax-cutting record on the county level.

O’Brien, a Monroe County legislator, says that “in contrast” his Republican opponent, Assemblyman Sean Hanna, voted for a large property tax increase in 2003.

“I’m running for Senate because the middle class is under attack in Monroe and Ontario counties,” said O’Brien. “Rising property taxes are driving families out of New York and away from the communities they’ve spent their entire lives in. It’s time for government to give us a break and help make life more affordable for ordinary New Yorkers.”

On the state level, Hanna did vote in favor of the 2 percent limit on annual property tax increases, a measure that was pushed hard by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2011. Hanna has also highlighted how close he is with Cuomo on fiscal issues, launching an ad that casts him as an independent-minded lawmaker, despite his high score from the state’s Conservative Party. And though he’s tried to cozy up with him, Hanna hasn’t exactly said the nicest things about Cuomo in the past.

Both O’Brien and Hanna are running in the Senate district being vacated by Republican Sen. James Alesi.
