So much for abstaining from politics on 9/11.

Sen. Mark Grisanti, one of the Senate Republicans’ most vulnerable members who must first succeed in Thursday’s primary election against attorney Kevin Stocker before defending his seat in November against the Democratic primary winner, announced that he has landed the coveted endorsement of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The Buffalo senator’s campaign says Giuliani has recorded a robocall for Grisanti and penned a letter to residents of the 60th Senatorial District on his behalf, which reads in part:

“In just two years, Mark has proven he’s a Senator who gets things done for Western New York. He finally won passage of UB 2020, after years of delay. His support was critical in making the long-awaited property tax cap a reality.”

“…And, let’s not forget that, with Mark Grisanti’s strong support, we now have the lowest middle class tax rates in 50 years. From Day One, Mark Grisanti has been an effective and respected voice for Western New York.”

“Please join me in supporting Republican State Senator Mark Grisanti for re-election in the Republican primary on Thursday, September 13th.”

The campaign did not release the full text of Giuliani’s letter or a copy and/or text of the call.

Giuliani’s name is practically synonymous with the 9/11 attacks (thanks in large part to his own self-promotion). He became known as “America’s Mayor” after he lead an hysterical city and calmed the nervous nation in the immediate aftermath of the horrific event.

Certainly no candidate has been above trying to exploit Giuliani’s 9/11 popularity, but to do so on the actual anniversary is a little beyond the pale.
