The political arm of Planned Parenthood today endorsed Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney over Republican incumbent Nan Hayworth.

“We are proud to endorse Sean Maloney for Congress today,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “We are confident that Sean will stand up to politicians in Washington who continue to launch attacks against women’s access to health care.”

The Hudson Valley district is considered among a half dozen or so competitive House races around New York.

In a news release, Planned Parenthood Action Fund reiterated a favorite criticism of Hayworth usually deployed by the Maloney campaign  — that she’s a “tea party favorite” despite her insistence that she’s held moderate views.

Hayworth was one of many Republicans to ride the 2010 GOP wave to win her first term.

“New York’s 18th district needs a representative in Congress who will fight for women and women’s health. And at the Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic Action Fund (PPHPAF), we believe Sean Patrick Maloney is up for the job,” said PPHPAF President and CEO Reina Schiffrin. “While in Congress, Rep. Hayworth has continually put ideology and politics ahead of the commonsense health care needs of her constituents.”
