City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, widely expected to be one of the leading contenders for New York City mayor next year, gave props last night to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for growing the Democratic Party in New York.

“I think the Democratic Party in New York is doing so very well right now one because of leadership at the top,” Quinn said last night. “Governor Cuomo is inspiring people to become actively involved. He’s really reminding people what the power of government can do when it’s focused, when it’s moving forward, when it’s working hard.”

It’s easy to remember a time when the Democratic Party was in shambles, including a period in the 1990s and even in the middle part of the last decade when Gov. David Paterson’s tenure in office was floundering.

Cuomo has made a point of growing the party on the local level, which includes making some key endorsements in the last off-cycle election for Suffolk and Erie county executives as well as the Yonkers mayor.
