Nick (and Liz): I understand where you are coming from and I am sorry for the devastation suffered by the Turner and Long families and the ordeal they now face. While I do not—repeat, do not—condone the mean-spirited comments leveled against them, you must grant that the anger is quite understandable after two years of a constant drumbeat of attack and hate directed at our President personally, as well as his policies, and at the people who support them, including even people in the Republican Party itself who do not march in robotic lockstep with the extreme right teabagging agenda. You must grant that this toxic atmosphere, and the fever pitch it has reached in the past couple of weeks, provokes a great deal of anger and reaction from their opponents. While I consider such behavior stooping to their level, I can appreciate why emotions have been stirred up so high and I only hope that somehow, some way, against all odds, this disaster hitting these ideologues personally forces them to reconsider their previously-expressed opinions, walk back their hateful rhetoric, and realize that like the President has repeatedly stated, we ARE all in this together and there IS a legitimate role for not only government, but collective effort on all fronts involving people helping people. I think the chances are slim to none that Mr. Long will experience a change of heart, but how wonderful if he did! This would represent some good and something positive that can be taken away from the fearsome destruction and havoc wreaked by Sandy.

I think that you missed the boat on this one, EB. You may be thinking more as a TV host trying not to offend a frequent guest than as a person who’s heart is usually in the “right place” on social justice matters.

I have tried to take the high road, for once in my life, on Mike Long’s misfortune. My only comment above was to tell to tell jerald that he’s getting on my last good nerve, so to speak. But I can’t keep my mouth shut when MY tribe (i.e., the LGBT community) is being chastised for seeing some karma in Mike Long’s misfortune.

None of the posters dismissed anyone’s loss other than Mike Long’s. Not even wooley, in my opinion. This thread is ALL about Mike Long and nobody else, so let’s not bring other people into it.

I’ve got a problem with this sentence: “These people – regardless of whether you agree with their political views – lost homes.” Hmmm. Property loss (no doubt insured) trumps political views. What kind of “political views” are we talking about?

To frack or not is a “political view” where you are absolutely correct, EB. I can’t stand Tom Libous, but I wouldn’t revel in his home burning down.

I’d like to see Cecilia Tkaczyk whip George Amedore’s @$$ on election day. Other people may not share my “political view,” particularly George. I wouldn’t take any pleasure in his house burning down, though. It’s not worth the effort to hate George. He’s small potatoes.

But…there’s always a but…my RIGHT to be treated the same as every other citizen in this country and marry whomever I want (assuming age requirements etc. are met) is a heck of a lot more than a “political view.” We’re talking about my very existence as a full-fledged human being in the eyes of the law of the State of New York…and the laws of the United States of America.

Mike Long has never shown gays even a scintilla of sympathy and compassion. He’d like to annihilate us. It’s just not socially acceptable for him to say that in NYS. To hell with Mike Long’s house burning down.

Mike Long has spent his entire life trying to degrade gay people and insure that we’re treated as 2nd class citizens. He’s EVIL. Don’t expect gays to have any more sympathy for Mike Long than I suspect black folks have for George Wallace or Jews have for Hitler, Goebbels and the rest of the Aryan murderers. When fate catches up with bastards like these guys, it’s perfectly legit to applaud. If tomorrow the grim reaper snatches up Mike Long, Hugh Farley or anyone else who would like to destroy gays (oh yes they would) I am perfectly justified in doing cartwheels down State Street past the Capitol. I won’t lose a minutes sleep over my actions.

Wow, some of you people are evil, heartless human beings. However I’m not sure about the human being part. If it is karma, I’m glad I’m not you. You should all be ashamed. We have different views, but this is the big difference with the GOP, they aren’t hate mongers. That’s one of the reasons I switched my affiliation from Dem to GOP. I see how nasty they are! I saw the people and I use this term loosely, crapping on cars and living like dirty pigs, demonizing the people that chose to get an education and a job. Then I see Glen Beck’s people, clean, neat, orderly. I see the connections Obama has had with people like Bill Ayers, and see that no matter how hard you guys try, you can’t find anything on Romney. He’s a clean cut family man, that doesn’t drink, smoke, or put his cigar in any places it wasn’t meant to go. That is IF he smoked. The man is clean as can be. The worst your side could find was putting his dog on a car. BFD. He also won’t release 100 years of income tax. Again BFD. Nothing illegal there! His kids are all clean cut too. No dirt on any of them. Must be killing you guys.
