Cuomo’s Dear Steve Letter
The good folks at Gannett had a hold of this earlier, but the letter from Gov. Andrew Cuomo to Sen. Stephen Saland officially endorsing him is now being released widely this afternoon.
It’s a worthwhile read, if only for a window into why Cuomo is crossing party lines to endorse the Republican lawmaker.
Cuomo does note that Saland had “integrity” and “courage” to back the same-sex marriage law in June 2011. But the governor also takes note of Saland’s support for other measures, including the expansion of the state’s DNA database, supporting two on-time budgets and backing adjustments to the state’s prison system.
Overall, Cuomo’s letter reads like something New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg could have written: post-partisan in word and tone, with a eye toward getting things done in government while also criticizing extremes in both major parties.
