Doheny Ad Highlights Taiwan Trip
Republican Matt Doheny’s newest TV ad blasts Democratic Rep. Bill Owens for his lobbyist-arranged trip to Taiwan that was initially paid for by an overseas university.
After Pro Publica broke the story, Owens personally repaid the more than $22,000 bill for the trip, saying at the time he was unaware he was breaking House rules and maintained his office did everything possible to file the trip with the ethcis committee.
The trip was arranged for Owens by Park Strategies, the lobbying shop led by former Sen. Al D’Amato, a Republican.
But that hasn’t been good enough for Doheny or Republicans, who have alluded to the ill-advised trip throughout the campaign, but this is the first ad that exclusively focuses on that episode.
“My opponent said he and his staff ‘did everything in accordance with the rules to the best of our knowledge at the time.’ My opponent is lawyer, so he knows: Ignorance of the law is no defense. Even worse, our congressman inexplicably continues to deny he broke any rule.”
