Sen. Mark Grisanti won his Republican primary in part by spending big very early on.

But now heading in to the general election next month in a three-way race, Grisanti has $50,028, a decline of $285,773 from the beginning of the year. In July, Grisanti reported $226,530.

Grisanti, one of four Republicans to back the same-sex marriage law, spent heavily on TV ads and mailers designed to highlight his independence and accomplishments in a heavily Democratic district. One ad quoted Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, extensively.

The freshman lawmaker’s cash-on-hand total puts him close to being on par with what Republican Kathy Marchione has left, according to CapCon’s Rick Karlin.

And it shouldn’t give Republicans too much cause to wring their hands, necessarily, since Democratic candidate Mike Amodeo reportedly negative $12,000 in his campaign finance filing, which is yet to post.

Still, one cause for concern is apparent: Grisanti’s biggest donor these past weeks after his primary win was the Senate Republican campaign committee, which transferred over $100,000.

The rest of his contributions: $3,570.
