YNN Congressional Debate Series
As the nation prepares for tonight’s presidential debate we are happy to announce that YNN and Capital Tonight will be hosting 4 Congressional debates in battleground districts across New York.
On Monday, October 15th at Marist College we will be hosting an hour long debate between Republican Rep. Nan Hayworth and Democratic Challenger Sean Patrick Maloney. Liz and Nick will co-host the event which will air on YNN in the Hudson Valley at 7pm. For political junkies who don’t live in that area and want to watch, we will be streaming the debate at the same time on our website.
On Wednesday, October 24th we will be in Western New York where we will host a debate between Democratic Rep. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Chris Collins at a Time Warner Cable facility in West Seneca. Liz will co-host that debate with YNN Anchor Casey Bortnick. It will air at 7pm in both the YNN Buffalo and YNN Rochester markets and will be streamed on our website.
Then the next day, Thursday, October 25th, we will be in Watertown at the Jefferson Community College for a live debate between Congressman Bill Owens and Republican challenger Matt Doheny in front of a live audience. That will be hosted by Liz and YNN’s Bill Carey. If you live in the YNN Syracuse, YNN North Country, or YNN Albany markets you will be able to catch that debate at 7pm.
All 3 of those debates will follow the same format we have used for years here on YNN – with opening and closing statements – one minute responses and 45 second rebuttals – and of course our lightning round. They are each one hour long.
We are also happy to announce that we will be teaming up with the Campbell Public Affairs Institute at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School to host a more open format debate in NY-24. It’s designed to give candidates more time to develop arguments and also moderators more discretion to advance the conversation. This will air on YNN Syracuse and YNN Rochester on October 29th at 7pm. At this time, Republican Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle has accepted our invitation, so has Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum. Democrat challenger Dan Maffei has declined the invite citing concerns with the format, but we are going to leave a podium spot for him should he decide he wants to participate.
Also want to remind you that we will be bringing you a live US Senate Debate from Skidmore College between Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Republican challenger Wendy Long. That will be at 7pm on Wednesday October 17th and will air across the state and on NY1. We’ll also live stream that debate on our websites.
And of course, we will bring you the 3 presidential debates live on YNN and NY1 starting tonight at 9pm. We will also televise the Vice Presidential debate next week.
