PAC Pushes Cuomo On Backing A Democratic Senate
Pivoting off of MSNBC host Chris Hayes’ criticism of Gov. Andrew Cuomo the Progressive Change Campaign Committee PAC is pushing him to back a Democratic takeover of the state Senate.
The group, founded in 2009 by Moveon.org online organizer Adam Green and SEIU organizer Stephanie Taylor, has a online petition calling on Cuomo “to take a stand” with a prominent reference to the Hayes’ commentary on its site:
Governor Cuomo has yet to publicly come out as a proponent of a Democratic majority in the State Senate.
Sign here, and call on Governor Cuomo to take a stand, allowing New York to take progressive action in 2013.
Governor Cuomo, as New York’s Democratic leader, we urge you to publicly fight for a Democratic Senate majority. Honor the will of the people who voted to empower Democrats to enact bold progressive change like public financing of elections.
Calling on Governor Cuomo to publicly support his party in the State Senate will help set the stage for progressive change in 2013.
An absentee ballot count in the 46th Senate District gonig to the Democrats would give them a numerical 32-member majority.
But it’s not entirely clear what the group thinks the governor’s stand would do for the leadership battle in the Senate.
Cuomo, who above all else wants a functioning Senate, has refrained from passing judgment on Simcha Felder, a Brooklyn Democrat who has pledged support for the Republican conference.
The Democratic governor did endorse Queens Sen. Joe Addabbo in his tight battle against Republican Eric Ulrich, though he also backed Sen. Stephen Saland, a Republican who voted in favor of his same-sex marriage law, in his three-way election and now trails in the absentee ballot count. He also endorsed IDC Sen. David Carlucci.
The fear of liberal groups is that should Republicans keep control of the chamber then a host of their agenda items, such as campaign finance reform and a minimum wage increase, would not happen despite Cuomo saying he supports those policies.
In his op/ed today, IDC leader Jeff Klein without indicating who he will align himself with, listed some of those goals while also declaring that the time has come for a coalition government.
