Krueger: Gipson The Newest Good Apple
Among the many congratulatory emails being sent around from mostly Democratic figures (and there’s a few of them!) Sen. Liz Krueger sent out an email today praising the recipients of her “No Bad Apples” political action committee.
Krueger, D-Manhattan, endorsed fellow Democrats Ted O’Brien, Cecilia Tkaczyk, George Latimer, Ryan Cronin, Bridget Flemming and Justin Wagner.
Of those four, O’Brien and Latimer won by comfortable margins, while Tkaczyk leads by 139 votes.
Krueger adds in the email that “resource constraints” prevented her PAC from formally endorsing Democratic candidate Terry Gipson in his three-way race against Sen. Stephen Saland and Neil DiCarlo, he’s been added as an additional “good apple” today. Gipson leads Saland by 1,600 votes and there are more than 8,000 absentees left to count in the race.
“We had another great Democratic victory Tuesday night, with Terry Gipson beating Stephen Saland in the 41st Senate District. For the record, Terry can indeed be called a ‘good apple’ and waged a fabulous campaign – I am overjoyed he is joining me in the Senate in 2013. While we felt we just couldn’t stretch the No Bad Apples team and resources far enough to jump into his race, we were sharing his great materials with other candidates all year. Now we need to be there to help Terry overcome his campaign debts and hit the ground running as the first Democratic senator from his region in about a century. For the record: when I called Terry late Tuesday, I told him ‘I’m prepared to eat my hat…just let me know what kind, so I can start to nibble.’”
If Gipson wins, it is one of the larger upsets in recent state Senate races. Saland, a Poughkeepsie Republican who backed the same-sex marriage law in June 2011, was endorsed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose unblemished endorsement win streak has ended.
