(Eliot Spitzer says a tax on financial transactions could be a silver bullet to avoid the fiscal cliff. (TU))

***************

Yes!!!

It has been listed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus; and bloggers have supported same.

It really has to be imposed at the national level.

Unfortunately, Wall St. has so much clout in Congress, this revenue source is not being mentioned.

It would give Grover Norquist nightmares as it would definitely be a tax increase, however you slice it.

Gov. Cuomo went to DC to plead for $40 billion in aid for Sandy cleanup.

At the same time, the state collects a very small stock transfer tax and
then rebates, sends it back, to the Street….amounting to an original
total of $16 billion.

Suppose Barack, Speaker Boehner, and Sen. Reid (and Schumer) support
NY sending this $16 billion to DC; and agree to do it for 2-3 years. It
would then be sent back to Albany.

But any flack from the Street would be dealt with in Wash., which ,metaphorically speaking, has bigger shoulders than Albany.

[Cuomo and Semi-First Lady Sandra Lee have an all-white Christmas tree guarded by what appears to be an expensive silver-plated tiger statue.]

It doesn't photograph well, now does it? It has the color of dirty snow. Yikes!

[In a move with possible statewide implications, the city of Binghamton is mounting an appeal of the landmark legal decision that struck down its moratorium on oil and gas drilling.]

Pshaw. Striking down the ban in October wasn't a LANDMARK decision. Reaffirming the lower court's decision (if that happens) won't be an earth shattering decision either. Hyperbole has run amok.

Binghamton's problem is that it did NOT invoke zoning laws but rather used its POLICE POWERS to enact the ban. It's the police powers thing that opened a can of worms. So redo the ban basing it on zoning laws.

["Cuomo’s promised “Buffalo Billion” economic-development program, outlined during his visit here Tuesday, doesn’t contain any quick fixes. More here / Announcing that the Maid of the Mist will stay in business, Cuomo called Niagara Falls “a jewel that we haven’t invested in, that we haven’t given the time and attention that it deserves.”]

Helping the Buffalo-Niagara region was a key objective for Cuomo in last year's State of the State. Now here we are a year later and what has he done for Buffalo? Nothing. What is he proposing to do? More talk. Mark your calendar, this time next year he'll be back again to talk some more. Wise-up western NY. The goon from Queens is not your friend and he's not going to solve your problems. Fix it yourself, or vote for someone who actually cares (or is at least smart enough to understand the problem).

This guy is a clown in an empty clown suit.
