Mulgrew Tells Mayoral Wannabees They Can Use His Name
United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew announced through his spokesman that all four of the New York City Democratic mayoral hopefuls can use his name in their fundraising appeals, he’s just not endorsing anyone right now.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew has given the four major candidates for the Democratic mayoral nomination – Bill DeBlasio, John Liu, Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson – permission to use his name in their fund-raising appeals. The UFT has made no decision about which candidate it will support in the Democratic primary.
Celeste Katz at The Daily Politics has the invitation to a fundraiser from Thompson, the former city comptroller making a second bid, that likely spurred the UFT into releasing the statement.
Not taking any sides in the Democratic primary is becoming sort of popular these days. Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters at a cabinet meeting yesterday that he wasn’t planning on getting involved in the city’s politics, though he did praise Republican MTA Chairman Joe Lhota’s handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
