The talk around the Capitol today is that Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to be the first state in the country to tackle gun control measures in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 Connecticut school shooting, but it remains to be seen if it will get done in a special session.

As we and others reported last night, there’s chatter of bringing lawmakers back before the Jan. 9 State of the State address, though the Cuomo administration is knocking those rumors down.

Cuomo is expected to go on Fred Dicker’s Talk-1300 radio show later this morning to discuss the story.

Republican Sen. Tom Libous of Binghamton told a radio station earlier today that the special session around the holiday season seems unlikely, given the complexities of the measures. However, Libous signaled the Senate GOP would be open to gun control measures such as creating a statewide registry for firearm license holders, as opposed to a county-by-count pistol registry.

Senate Democrats are eager to get gun control measures done as well, with incoming Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins releasing a statement pushing the matter this morning.

“The Senate Democratic Conference has been a long time supporter of common sense gun laws and we welcome news that a special session to address these laws is being discussed. We stand ready to offer our support. The time has come to not only have this conversation, but to act in the best interests of our constituents, and our children. We have a responsibility to all of those who have been impacted by gun violence to come together, begin the healing process and find common sense solutions to this societal plague.”
