Senate Dems: It’s A Coup
Senate Democrats called the newly announced IDC-GOP Senate coalition “a coup” that ignores the will of the voters.
“This is not a coalition but a coup against all New Yorkers who voted for Democratic control of the Senate and a progressive state government,” said Senate Democratic spokesman Mike Murphy. “Sadly, the real victims of today’s announcement are the people of our State, whose clearly expressed desire for progress on a host of issues will now be scuttled. Senate Democrats will remain fierce advocates for them and the issues New Yorkers want to see implemented like standing up for women’s health, passing real campaign finance reform, raising the minimum wage and enacting common sense gun laws.”
Democrats have a numerical majority in the chamber that could be as high 34 members, but one Democrat from Brooklyn plans to conference with the Republicans and five breakaway lawmakers are joined in the Independent Democratic Conference. The IDC and Senate Republicans announced a power-sharing agreement today that allows for a rotating Senate presidency between IDC leader Jeff Klein and Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos.
“Coup” is a fighting word around these parts and the use of it in the statement today shows Democrats don’t consider the coalition to be any more legitimate than the Pedro Espada-Hiram Monserrate team up with the Republicans in 2009.
