Conservative Party: Don’t Blame The ‘Inanimate Object’
The state’s Conservative Party today released a legislative memo calling for stricter criminal laws in the wake of a spate of shootings, saying that placing blame on “the inanimate object” — in this case a gun — isn’t the way to go.
From the memo:
The best solution is two-pronged: strengthen the rights of law-abiding citizens and keep those who disregard the safeguards already in place to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, and those who, like Spengler enjoy killing, in prison without any possibility of being released.
The Conservative Party of New York State staunchly supports the rights of law-abiding citizens and stresses that any solutions that the Legislative Body passes must incorporate putting the full culpability on the person committing the crime not the inanimate object that has become the symbol of finding solutions to indefensible terroristic acts.
The party notes that the Webster shooter who killed two firefighters after purposefully setting a blaze killed his first victim not with a gun, but with a hammer (this is a frequent argument for those opposed to gun control — the idea that anything could be deadly if put in the wrong hands).
The memo adds that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to update the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magainzes will do little to stem the incidents.
Still, the CP may be too late to mobilize a sustained effort against a broad agreement on gun control in Albany. A deal to update the assault weapons ban, limit magazines and strengthen sentences for gun crimes appears to be excuriatingly close. If reached, it would likely have the support of more than a few Republican senators.
The full statement is after the jump.
All New Yorkers were shocked by the heartbreaking news on December 14, 2012 when 20 youngsters and 6 adults were savagely murdered in Newtown, Connecticut. Just fifteen days later, a deranged ex-convict lured firefighters and police to his home and cold-bloodedly did what he liked to do best: kill people. The Conservative Party abhors these acts and seeks solutions to these indefensible terroristic acts.
New York already has very strict gun laws, yet criminals find ways to get their weapon of choice. The arrest of Dawn Nguyen, who owned the guns used in Webster, NY, called her next door neighbor “Uncle Billy” and had “Uncle Billy” with her when she purchased the guns. “Uncle Billy” supposedly stole those guns to use in his planned killing spree. More laws will not stop criminals. William “Uncle Billy” Spengler murdered his 92 year old grandmother with a hammer because he wanted to go out; Spengler never should have been released from prison.
Any further restrictions on legal gun ownership in New York State will jeopardize the safety of all New York’s citizens. The best solution to end indefensible terroristic acts is to prosecute to the fullest extent possible all those who use illegal guns. Increase the penalties for using guns that are not purchased legally and if illegal guns are used in the commission of a deadly felony, the conviction should be life in prison without possibility of parole.
The solutions proposed by Governor Cuomo will do little to end the indefensible terroristic acts committed by deranged evil perpetrators, but will make it even harder for law abiding citizens to protect themselves like Melinda Herman did last week when a robber broke into her home in Georgia. The Founding Fathers knew the importance of self-protection, and gave us the right to protect ourselves. As we stated, criminals ignore laws and manage to obtain any type of gun or magazine they want. Why does anyone want to let criminals be the only ones who have the means to kill at will?
The best solution is two-pronged: strengthen the rights of law-abiding citizens and keep those who disregard the safeguards already in place to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, and those who, like Spengler enjoy killing, in prison without any possibility of being released.
