Cuomo Enlists Help On Gun Control
With pushback coming from various corners of the state over his gun control package signed into law last week, the state Democratic Party is mailing on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s behalf this morning in support.
In an email sent to Democrats, the state party touts the NY SAFE Act, a measure that includes an updated assault weapons ban and a reduction in rounds for magazines from 10 to seven.
The email directs Democrats to the New Yorkers Against Gun Violence’s website to sign a petition backing the law.
Of course, opponents of the law have petitions of their own, including Sen. Kathy Marchione, who this weekend touted more than 100,000 signatures to repeal certain provisions (though I don’t know how many are actually from New York. A Siena poll conducted before, during and after the gun control legislation found broad support for the key provisions of the law).
Pro-gun rallies were held over the weekend in Albany and in Buffalo (the latter of which was led by Carl Paladino).
Cuomo appears to have little desire to make major revisions to the law, even if chapter amendments may make clear certain carve outs for law enforcement.
He’s also dismissed the criticism that the law was passed too quickly via his message of necessity that waived the three-day aging process as a typical complaint from opponents of any particular measure.
The full email is after the jump.
Dear Fellow Democrat,
On January 15th, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and state legislators passed the NY SAFE Act – comprehensive legislation aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill while respecting the rights of legal gun owners.
Go to www.nyagv.org to thank Governor Cuomo and the NYS Legislators for passing this important bill.
Despite overwhelming support across the state for the NY SAFE Act, the gun lobby is pushing our legislators to try to repeal the act or change parts of the bill.
That is why New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is launching a petition campaign to thank Governor Cuomo and state legislators for their hard work and show the vast support of New Yorkers for these new and fair laws.
We need you to raise your voice and back the representatives in state government that helped pass the NY SAFE Act. Go to www.nyagv.org to show your support and sign the petition.
Together we can make our communities safer and preserve the rights of all New Yorkers.
Sincerely,
New York State Democratic Committee
