Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver — re-elected to another term to lead is 100-plus member Democratic conference this afternoon — told reporters following the election that talks this evening will continue on gun control, opening up the possibility for a deal to be struck before Gov. Andrew Cuomo gives his third State of the State address Wednesday afternoon.

“They’re still going on,” Silver said. “There will be further meetings this evening and we’ll see where we are. I will talk with him, staff is meeting. I think it’s achievable.”

The Manhattan Democrat, however, did not provide a timetable on when an agreement might be struck or specifics on what a deal might include.

Cuomo is pushing for a renewed assault weapons ban that he says would close loopholes in the existing ban from 1994, but Senate Republicans countered with a proposal for new anti-crime legislation.

“I think we’ll come up with a reasonable definition and a reasonable definition of the closing of loopholes,” Silver said.

Senate Republicans on Monday claimed it was Silver, not there conference, who was holding up gun control by not agreeing to increased criminal penalties. Before heading into his conference meeting, Silver called that a “lie.”

“The Senate has been very responsive to the gun lobby and used these lies in order to avoid the truth which is they want to be responsive to the gun lobby,” he said.

The Republican conference is also seeking a strengthening of Kendra’s Law, which would close loopholes in the required hospitalization of the violently mentally ill.

“That will be part of the discussion that’s talking place,” Silver said of proposal.

Still left to do tomorrow for the speaker is to select a majority leader after the retirement of Assemblyman Ron Canestrari.

Names floating for the post range from Assemblyman Bob Sweeney of Long Island to Assemblyman Joe Morelle of Monroe County. Silver says he hasn’t decided who will get the job.

“I’m still thinking about it,” he said. “Tomorrow we’ll find out.”
