Two Democrats Receive Committee Chairmanships (Updated)
Two Democratic Senators part of the mainline conference in the chamber will receive committee chairmanships in an announcement to be made later this evening.
Sen. Eric Adams of Brooklyn will be the head of the Senate Aging Committee, while freshman Sen. James Sanders will be chairman of the Senate Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee.
Updated: The full slate of Republican and IDC committee memberships is out. The list confirms our earlier reporting that Brooklyn Democratic Sen. Simcha Felder, who is conferencing with the GOP, will be the chairman of a newly created subcommittee on New York City education. The full list after the jump.
The chairmanship move comes after initial criticism from minority community leaders that the coalition leadership of the Senate composed of a faction of breakaway Democrats and Republicans shut out black and Latino lawmakers from key positions of power and influence in the chamber (the IDC blunted some of the criticism by adding Sen. Malcolm Smith, the first black majority leader of the Senate who was deposed during the leadership coup of 2009, to their ranks).
Adams and Sanders are black, and they will remain part of the “regular” Democratic conference.
No Republican lawmakers — who retain control of committees such as Finance and Rules — are losing their gavels. But the move allows the Senate coalition to demonstrate their willingness to share power in the unique experiment that hasn’t been seen in Albany for decades.
The Aging Committee was led by Sen. David Valesky, a Democrat who is part of the Independent Democratic Conference and now its deputy leader. Alcoholism and Drug Abuse was led by Sen. Jeff Klein, but he was elevated to co-president of the Senate alongside Republican Leader Dean Skelos under the terms of the coalition power-sharing agreement.
Sanders came to the chamber after unseating Sen. Shirley Huntley, a Democrat, who faces corruption charges.
Adams is seeking the Brooklyn borough president post later this fall.
